- New Delhi Railway station stampede: At least 18 people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a stampede that broke out late Saturday night (February 15, 2025) at New Delhi Railway Station, officials said. The stampede took place on platforms 14 and 15, where a crowd of passengers was waiting for trains to Prayagraj, the venue of the ongoing Maha Kumbh festival.
- Delhi Acting Chief Minister Atishi said that 15 people were pronounced dead on arrival at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital in central Delhi, of which 14 were women. Five of the dead were minors, two of whom were below the age of 10.

Steps Taken Till Now: On Sunday, a high-level committee launched an inquiry into the incident. The team has collected all CCTV footage from the station and has called in eyewitnesses, said member Narsingh Deo. Fire officials said four fire tenders were sent on Saturday after receiving distress calls of a stampede on platforms 14 and 15 at 9:55 p.m. The injured were rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital.
Reasons for the Stampede: Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) KPS Malhotra described how there was a huge crowd on platform 14 as the Prayagraj Express had arrived. Also, people traveling on Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani were waiting on platforms 12, 13, and 14 due to the delay in the trains. He added, “As per our information, 1,500 general tickets were sold every hour, which is why the crowd became uncontrollable.”

Did Platform Change Announcement Cause New Delhi Railway station stampede updates. ?
What Cops Said
Delhi Police issued a clarification after witnesses alleged that a last-minute platform change announcement for the special train to Prayagraj triggered panic prior to the fatal stampede.
The police say that the arrival of yet another special train at Prayagraj, the Prayagraj Special, at platform number 16 bewildered the passengers waiting for the special train at platform number 14.
“The announcement of the arrival of the Prayagraj Special at Platform 16 created confusion as the Prayagraj Express was already at Platform 14. Those who were unable to reach their train at Platform 14 believed that their train was arriving at Platform 16 resulting in the stampede. Four other trains were also going to Prayagraj, three of which were running late, resulting in sudden overcrowding,” the police added.
