Chasing a challenging 252-run goal after being invited to bat first by Mitchell Santner, India made a thunderous beginning on the back of captain Rohit Sharma’s turbo-charged fifty. The captain reached his tournament fifty in 41 deliveries, going past the mark in a canter with three sixes and a string of fours after India reached their tournament quickest team fifty in 7.1 overs.

After the departures of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma’s departure on 76 enabled New Zealand to battle back into the contest before crucial stands by Shreyas Iyer-Axar Patel and KL Rahul-Hardik Pandya took India forward once again.

India eventually finished the nail-biting chase with Ravindra Jadeja hitting the winning runs in the penultimate over off pacer Will O’Rourke.
